Waterways Cruise

Experience the pristine waterways and amazing marine life by jumping aboard a cruise of the Gippsland Lakes systems or Lakes Entrance. Take the chance to see a population of rare and endangered Burruanan dolphins, which call the Gippsland Lakes home, or simply enjoy spotting the wallabies, seals, sea birds and wide range of flora and fauna that are found in the area. Buchan Caves

Make sure to visit the natural wonder of the Buchan Caves, located in Buchan less than 50 minutes from the park, the caves provide endless areas and tunnels to explore. Filled with wonderous limestone formations and stalactites and stalagmites the caves will have you in ore. You can either explore solo or take a guided tour through the Fairy Cave or the Royal Cave. Formed by underground rivers and when rain water seeps through the cracks, the limestone is slowly dissolved creating a honeycomb of caves and spectacular limestone formations. Buchan Caves reserve also has a swimming pool fed by a natural spring, playground, walking trails, picnic ground, amenities and a visitor information centre.

Watersports

Dive in and experience a water sports paradise in Lakes Entrance. An abundance of fresh and salt water lakes, rivers and coastal waterways await, providing fantastic boating, water skiing, canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Why not hire a kayak from the park and explore Cunninghame Arm, join a tour and paddle through tranquil pools in the Michell River or get your heart pumping with turbulent rapids and white-water rafting on the Mitta Mitta River. If you are wanting to water-ski, several designated spots are also available in the lakes. Sailing is also a popular option with the Lakes National Park providing public jetties linking to picnic spots.

Beach Activities

If you’re looking for crystal clear waters and endless stretches of white sandy coastlines the Gippsland Region and Lakes Entrance is the place for you. Beach access is available just minutes from the park with other iconic locations such as 90-mile beach located nearby. Taking a dip? The best options for families in the warmer months are Cape Paterson, Venus Bay, Sandy Point and Lakes Entrance. Or if you’re wanting to catch a wave, the coast of Wilsons Promontory National Park is a great starting spot. The area also offers incredible snorkelling and scuba diving. Peek at the wonders beneath the ocean at the broad rock platforms and underwater reefs of Bunurong Marine Park.

Nature Walks

Breath in fresh air and take in the abundance of wildlife on a range of bushwalking and nature walking trails throughout the region. Inspiring Gippsland walks will take you on a journey through ancient rainforests, magnificent alpine areas and untouched coastlines. A local favourite is the 4.6km entrance to the lakes walk. Starting at the Footbridge on Myer Street, meander across the bridge toward the beach and wander around the edge of the lake through coastal bushland to Flagstaff hill. Take in the spectacular views of boats crossing the bar before heading back the same way or further along to 90-mile Beach.

Fishing

Cast a line and enjoy exceptional lake and beach fishing around Lakes Entrance, Metung and Paynesville. Situated on the edge of the Gippsland Lakes, the area is a hotspot and renowned for its year-round fishing. Drop a line close to the many pylons, off a jetty or near to moored boats and you are sure to get a bite. If you’re wanting to get out on the water make sure to join a charter tour. Lake Tyers Charters will take you through clear, safe waters and promises loads of huge flathead and blue nose bream. Or if you’re looking for a great beach fishing spot, why not give night fishing a go at 90-Mile Beach, a popular activity in the winter months.
